Talking about what happens when we don't pray
Laura DeMaria
This morning I had the pleasure of joining the Relevant Radio show once more, this time to discuss what happens when we don't pray. Always a thrill, especially when I get ~half hour and some guest callers. Check it out! The audio is here and you can start it at about 1:50. There's my voice on the airwaves! Never gets old.
Really the thing I think so much about when it comes to prayer - and which we talked about on the show - is how fidelity to the prayer time is so important. In my opinion, it's the most under-emphasized, and critical, component of what it means to have a prayer life. It's part of the reason why I don't see how there could be a "shortcut" to a deeper spiritual life. You have to show up, over and over, dedicated, even when you don't feel like it. As St. Ignatius calls his type of contemplative prayer, it is an "exercise," just as you exercise any other muscle. As much as I'd love to wish for a perfectly sculpted and toned body to literally happen overnight, it won't, and neither will a, uh, "toned" inner life. Just stick with it, man. You will learn something, I bet.
